About the artist

William Michael Harnett, an Irish-American painter, gained prominence for his exceptionally detailed trompe-l'œil (French for "deceive the eye") still lifes. He focused on portraying commonplace objects with remarkable realism, becoming a leading figure in this distinctive genre. Frequently, Harnett included items such as books, pipes, and musical instruments in his works, painting them so convincingly that viewers often mistook them for tangible, three-dimensional objects.

Harnett was born in Clonakilty, County Cork, Ireland, amidst the upheaval of the Potato Famine. The early years of his life were marked by adversity and emigration, as his family relocated to the United States while he was still a baby. They eventually settled in Philadelphia, whose lively cultural scene and accessible artistic instruction would have a profound impact on Harnett’s artistic path.

In 1868, after obtaining U.S. citizenship, Harnett earned a living by engraving patterns on silver tableware—a craft that likely helped him develop his extraordinary eye for detail. Determined to advance his artistic ambitions, he attended evening classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, then pursued further studies at Cooper Union and the National Academy of Design in New York. These educational experiences refined the technical abilities that later became hallmarks of his painting.

The earliest recorded oil painting by Harnett, a still life, was completed in 1874 and signaled the onset of his professional art career. In the years that followed, he created a multitude of paintings, widely admired for both their illusionistic effects and technical mastery. Harnett’s enduring influence remains, securing his role as a trailblazer in American trompe-l'œil painting and inspiring countless artists who came after him.
