About the artist

Luigi Querena was an Italian painter renowned for his expertise in depicting intricate landscapes and urban vistas, with a particular focus on his hometown, Venice. Born in Venice, he belonged to a family with strong artistic traditions; he followed the path of his father, Lattanzio Querena, a noted painter recognized for his works on historical and religious themes.

Displaying remarkable talent and devotion to art from a young age, Luigi Querena entered the distinguished Venice Academy of Fine Arts when he was only 12. Under the mentorship of Federico Moja, a prominent Italian artist and instructor, he further refined both his technique and his artistic perspective.

Querena made his mark as a vedute painter, a style devoted to highly detailed and realistic portrayals of cityscapes or landscapes. Frequently, his artworks captured views of Venice, rendered with accuracy and an evocative atmosphere that reflected the city's splendor and majesty. Recognition for his abilities in this genre was granted by both his peers and art critics.

The critic Sagredo notably observed that Luigi Querena was bringing back the style of Canaletto, the illustrious 18th-century Venetian vedute painter. This comparison underscores Querena’s role in perpetuating and revitalizing the tradition of Venetian view painting, thereby making a meaningful impact on his city’s artistic legacy.
