Leontine von Littrow

Leontine "Lea" von Littrow, often called Lea or Leo von Littrow, was an Austrian painter renowned for her atmospheric landscapes and marine paintings. Her oeuvre skillfully depicts natural scenes and seascapes, demonstrating both her technical mastery and her acute perception of the environment around her.

Born in Trieste on March 17, 1860, Littrow grew up in an intellectually distinguished family. Her father, Heinrich von Littrow, served as a naval captain and was also an esteemed cartographer, a background that likely fostered Leontine’s fascination with marine subjects. Her mother was Fanny Barry, and her grandfather, Joseph Johann von Littrow, the prominent astronomer, contributed to the family’s tradition of scholarly achievement.

Littrow received her formal art training in Paris, studying under the painter Jean d'Alheim. This experience exposed her to contemporary techniques and sharpened her artistic skills, allowing her to cultivate a personal style rooted in the practices of 19th-century European art.
