About the artist

Hugh Bolton Jones (20 October 1848 – 24 September 1927) was an American landscape painter celebrated for his calm and intricately rendered views of the nation’s countryside. Born and brought up in Baltimore, Maryland, Jones demonstrated artistic talent from a young age, prompting him to receive formal instruction locally before continuing his studies in New York.

During his time in New York, Jones fell under the influence of Frederic Edwin Church, a significant member of the Hudson River School. This mentorship shaped Jones’s own dedication to realistic detail and atmospheric nuance within his landscapes. He concentrated mainly on scenes from the Eastern United States, capturing peaceful environments that frequently omitted human presence, thus highlighting the subtle beauty and variable character of nature.

Jones spent four years living in Europe, where he adopted additional techniques and approaches that enhanced his artistic manner. Returning to New York in 1881, he established his home and studio there, sharing the space with his younger brother, Francis Coates Jones, who likewise achieved recognition as an artist. The brothers fostered a highly creative setting, consistently encouraging and motivating each other’s art over many years.

Over the course of his life, Hugh Bolton Jones was honored at various exhibitions in the United States and France, receiving a number of distinguished awards. Works by Jones are held in prominent public institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian Institution, solidifying his place as an important figure in American landscape painting.
