Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione

Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione (23 March 1609 – 5 May 1664) was an influential Italian Baroque artist associated with the Genoese school. He displayed remarkable versatility as a painter, printmaker, and draftsman. Castiglione is widely recognized today for his groundbreaking achievements in etching, as well as for creating the monotype printmaking process, a technique that involves producing a single impression from a painted image. In his native land, he was commonly known as Il Grechetto, and in France, he was referred to as Le Benédette.

Castiglione worked across a range of genres, including portraits, historical subjects, and landscapes. Yet, he became most famous for his rustic scenes, in which animals often outnumbered human figures. This focus highlighted his sharp powers of observation and his distinct narrative style. He frequently depicted biblical stories—particularly those centered on Noah’s Ark and the animals boarding it—interpreting these episodes repeatedly with extraordinary originality.

Castiglione's innovations extended beyond his choice of themes; his technical experimentation had a lasting impact on printmaking. Through his invention of the monotype, he introduced a new form of expression to the medium, influencing generations of artists to follow. His etchings are especially noted for their energetic linework and striking contrasts of light and shadow, attesting to his skill in both design and execution.
