Christian Rohlfs

Christian Rohlfs (November 22, 1849 – January 8, 1938) was a renowned German painter and printmaker. He is considered one of the leading figures in German Expressionism, a movement known for its vivid use of color, expressive emotion, and frequent movement away from realistic depiction.

Rohlfs’ artistic path began with academic training that focused on traditional and realistic painting techniques. Gradually, he shifted toward more experimental approaches and, by the early 20th century, fully adopted Expressionism. Shaped by the influence of his peers and the changing art world around him, Rohlfs crafted a distinctive style marked by striking brushwork and strong contrasts.

Over the course of his productive career, Rohlfs produced several hundred works, including both paintings and prints. His themes varied widely, encompassing landscapes, urban scenes, and intense representations of human figures. Remarkably, he ventured into printmaking later in life, creating memorable woodcuts and linocuts that powerfully demonstrated his expressive technique.

Christian Rohlfs made a lasting impact on modern art, and his legacy endures within the development of German Expressionism. His paintings and prints are now found in major collections and museums, admired for their bold color, lively compositions, and deep emotional resonance.
