Arthur-Alfred Brunel de Neuville

Arthur-Alfred Brunel de Neuville (1852–1941) was a renowned French painter, highly regarded for his expressive still lifes and delightful portrayals of animals, especially cats, to which he had a particular fondness. He was born in Paris on December 8, 1852, to Léon Brunel, an artist, and Marie Zénaïe Champenois. While comprehensive details of his formative artistic education remain limited, it is generally accepted that his father provided his earliest lessons, nurturing his innate talent from childhood.

Brunel de Neuville first appeared at the Paris Salon in 1883, presenting his work under the name Brunel-Neuville. His debut piece there, titled ‘Langouste’ (lobster), signaled the beginning of an extensive and accomplished career. Participation in the Paris Salon significantly expanded his reputation among French art circles, with his skill in rendering detailed and realistic still lifes gaining particular attention.

Beginning in 1889, he was an active exhibitor with the Société des Artistes Français, a leading organization within the French art world at the time. As his acclaim continued to grow, he was elected as a member of the Société in 1907, an acknowledgment of both his ability and popularity. Beyond still lifes, Brunel de Neuville was also admired for his paintings of animals, with cats frequently appearing as beloved motifs. He occasionally adopted pseudonyms, such as Florentin de Neuville and Laurence de Neuville, to sign his works.

Throughout his life, Arthur-Alfred Brunel de Neuville remained fervently committed to his art until his death in Paris in 1941; he was interred in Montmartre Cemetery. His legacy persists in public collections today; his paintings can be found in institutions like the Béziers Museum, Brest Museum, Charles de Bruyères Chadateau Thierry, Saint-Brieuc Museum, and Louviers Museum, where his elegant technique and affectionate portrayals of animals continue to fascinate admirers of art.
