About the artist

Alexandre Lunois (1863–1916) was a multifaceted French artist, celebrated as a painter, draughtsman, and printmaker. He gained particular distinction for his groundbreaking work with the lithotint process, which introduced enhanced tonal variations and expressive capabilities to printmaking. His expertise in this technique established him as a leading figure among French printmakers at the dawn of the 20th century.

Many of Lunois's works portray scenes from Parisian life, capturing the energy and variety found throughout the city. He illustrated crowds, moments of daily routine, spirited social gatherings, and, in particular, dancers and women. Through these subjects, he revealed both the allure and vibrancy of urban existence. His art is marked by a feeling of immediacy, achieved through fluid brushstrokes and a sense of atmosphere that draws viewers into the moment.

Beyond his cityscapes and genre paintings, Alexandre Lunois was also recognized for his achievements in book illustration. He created lithographs to accompany numerous literary texts, most prominently the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen. With his illustrations, he brought these stories vividly to life, blending imagination with sensitivity and showing a remarkable talent for interpreting narrative through visual means.

Lunois’s impact went further than his own body of work; his advancements in lithographic processes inspired other artists and printmakers. His enduring legacy resides in his evocative subject matter as well as his commitment to technical advancement, firmly establishing his place in the annals of French art at the close of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries.
