About the artist

Achille Laugé (1861-1944) was a French painter whose birthplace was Arzens, a small village in the Occitanie region. Renowned for his unique role in the Neo-Impressionist movement, Laugé worked in a style that emerged in the late nineteenth century in response to Impressionism, with a keen focus on scientific theories of color and light. Despite prevailing artistic trends, he consistently preserved a special bond with his hometown and the landscapes of southern France, both of which frequently offered profound inspiration for his art.

Having begun his education at respected art institutions such as the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Laugé moved among celebrated artists, yet opted to forge his own independent path. He was especially drawn to exploring pointillism and divisionism—the innovative techniques advanced by Georges Seurat and Paul Signac—though he modified them to highlight the particular radiance and serene beauty found in the countryside of southern France.

Laugé challenged the standard painting techniques promoted by his instructors. Instead of rigidly following academic principles, he crafted a distinctive style that fused precise brushwork with lively and varied colors. His inventive approach rendered his art progressive and unconventional during his time, occasionally creating confusion among critics and the public alike.

Throughout his career, Achille Laugé remained deeply devoted to Occitania, continuously allowing the region’s rural environment to influence and guide his creative work. Today, his paintings are admired for their balanced compositions and nuanced use of light, distinguishing him as an important, though sometimes underappreciated, presence within the Neo-Impressionist movement.
