Anne Vallayer-Coster (1744 – 1818) was a distinguished French artist of the 18th century, renowned mainly for her exceptional still lifes. Her refined technique and meticulous attention to detail set her apart from other painters of her time, gaining her both admiration and respect within the Parisian art scene.

Early in her career, she received notable acclaim, becoming one of the rare women accepted into the esteemed Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1770, at only twenty-six years of age. This was an extraordinary feat, given the severely limited opportunities available to women artists during that period.

Collectors and members of the nobility deeply valued Vallayer-Coster’s art, and she received support from the royal court, notably from Queen Marie Antoinette. Her artworks frequently display abundant arrangements of flowers, fruit, and opulent objects, all depicted with striking realism and vivid colors.

In spite of the difficulties brought about by the French Revolution and evolving artistic preferences, Anne Vallayer-Coster persisted in creating and exhibiting her paintings throughout her lifetime. Her works are now housed in major museums, and she is recognized as one of the preeminent still life painters of her time.
