Michele Marieschi, who was also known as Michele Giovanni Marieschi or Michiel, was an Italian painter and engraver working in the 18th century. Born in Venice in 1710, he spent the majority of his life in his hometown. Marieschi is especially noted for his intricate landscapes and city views, collectively called vedute. His art offers vibrant, atmospheric glimpses that convey the singular character of Venice.

Marieschi belonged to the esteemed tradition of Venetian vedutisti, or painters of views, alongside artists like Canaletto and Francesco Guardi. By introducing a fresh approach, he played a notable role in increasing the popularity of vedute painting during his time. His style is marked by energetic compositions and a dynamic spatial sense, at times showcasing Venice from unconventional perspectives.

Beyond his views of Venice, Marieschi was also celebrated for his architectural capricci—paintings that merge realistic and imaginary architectural elements. These works often demonstrate his profound interest in stage design, an influence that is closely tied to his early experience as a theater set designer. This foundation shaped his bold use of perspective and his talent for lending a sense of theatricality to his paintings.

Marieschi’s paintings and engravings were much prized by collectors, particularly among foreign travelers taking the Grand Tour of Venice. Despite a relatively short career—ending with his early death at 33 in 1743—his works continue to be admired for their energy and his unique vision of Venice’s scenery.
